Make-A-Wish Foundation Recipient

Sara McClinton, a 25+ year employee of CGL, has a granddaughter who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. DeluKai Olegaria Richardson was born on August 14, 2004, and has received all three surgeries in the series to treat her condition. The last surgery was performed in June of 2008 with complications. After suffering several strokes and open heart surgeries, it was determined that Kai’s only option was a heart transplant. On August 14, 2009 (her birthday), Kai received a new heart at MUSC in Charleston. She is doing extremely well and there have been no signs of rejection. Even though she is continuing physical therapy (due to the last strokes she suffered), she was allowed to start attending school in February and is enjoying being a normal five year old!

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. The South Carolina chapter grants over 125 wishes each year. The Make-A-Wish Foundation, South Carolina chapter, granted Kai a wish for her family to visit Disney World. She was presented her wish for a trip with her parents and 3 brothers on May 1, 2010. To learn how you can share the power of a wish, visit www.sc.wish.org.

Palmetto Half Marathon and 5K

Congratulations to Aaron, Alice, and Don for running in the inaugural Palmetto Half Marathon and 5K on April 10, 2010. CGL was a community sponsor for this event. This year the race, consisting of a half marathon, 5k and kids fun run, sold out at just over 1200 participants, something virtually unheard of for a new race in Columbia, SC. "Huge success!” “Your hard work paid off!” “Wonderful race!”  These are just a few of the comments the inaugural Palmetto Half Marathon received regarding the event.

In its very first year, the Palmetto Half Marathon raised $28,800 for local charities due to great support from the local running community and its many community partners. Race proceeds went to aide the fight against hunger and homelessness in the Midlands by benefiting Alston Wilkes Society, St. Lawrence Place, Family Shelter and Harvest Hope Food Bank. Each charity will receive $7,200 to use as needed to help local families in need.

The race committee is already hard at work planning next year’s race which will be held at the Village at Sandhill on April 16, 2011. For more information on the race, visit www.palmettohalfmarathon.com or email palmettohalfmarathon@hotmail.com.
